United States · Licensing exam

Can you become an electrician online?

Not completely. You can study online and, in some programs, take classes online, but the work hours have to be done on the job. And in the states we checked, the license exam is taken in person at a test center. Texas, California and Washington don’t offer a remote exam in their bulletins.

The exam is at a test center

The exams are on a computer, so they can feel like an online test. But you sit them in a supervised room, with your ID checked at the door.

  • Texas: PSI test centers in 16 cities, from Abilene to Waco.
  • California: Pearson VUE test centers, booked online or by phone after the state approves you.
  • Washington: PSI test centers, booked after L&I approves you.

The hours can’t be done online

Licenses are built on supervised work. Texas needs 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under a master electrician for a journeyman license. California needs 8,000 hours for the General Electrician exam.

An online course can teach theory and the code, but it doesn’t replace those hours. If a site promises an online electrician license, check it against your state’s rules first.

What you can do online

  • Apply. California has an online application. Texas still asks for the first journeyman application by mail.
  • Book your exam with PSI or Pearson VUE once you’re approved.
  • Read your state’s candidate bulletin, which lists every topic and how many questions come from each.
  • Take an online exam prep course, or watch free code videos.
  • Read NFPA codes on NFPA’s free access page. You’ll still need your own printed copy for the Texas exam.

Practice the way the exam works

Online quizzes are good for the theory and formulas. But on an open-book exam, speed with the code book matters just as much. Practice looking things up in the same edition and format you’ll use on the day. In California that means searching the on-screen PDF. CPS HR has a short video showing how it works.
