United States · Citizenship test

Can you take the US citizenship test online?

No. The citizenship test is only given in person, at your interview with a USCIS officer. You can still do a lot online, though. You can file your application, get every official study material, and practice as often as you want.

What you can do online

One thing to know: if you want the reduced fee or a fee waiver, you have to file on paper.

  • File Form N-400. It costs $710 online, compared with $760 on paper.
  • Download the official question list and study guide for your test version.
  • Check the current answers for questions about officials, like the President, on the USCIS test updates page.
  • Practice with free quizzes, flash cards and audio.

Online practice from USCIS

USCIS has a free 20-question online practice test, but it covers the 2008 test. Its audio files and flash cards are also for the 2008 list of 100 questions.

For the 2025 test, USCIS gives you the list of 128 questions and a study guide as PDFs. As of October 2026 we didn’t find an official interactive practice test for it. Our practice test and the free sites on our where to learn page fill that gap.

Online quizzes aren’t like the real thing

Most online practice is multiple choice. The real test isn’t. The officer asks out loud and you answer from memory.

So use quizzes to learn, then test yourself the hard way. Cover the answers, have someone read the questions to you, and answer out loud.
