The VicRoads Learner Permit Test Online

Yes, you can do the whole learner permit test online at home, and it’s now the usual way. It’s a course in three sections followed by a final assessment, and VicRoads says it takes about 4 to 6 hours in total. Your first attempt is free.

How the course works

The course has three sections: Your Driving Attitude, Signs and Rules, and Sharing the Road with others. Each one ends with a Challenge. Pass it and you earn that section’s key. Once you’ve got all three keys, the final assessment opens.

You don’t have to read the handbook first, because the course teaches what the assessment covers. You can go through it as many times as you like, and family, friends or your supervising driver can help you with this part.

Rules for the final assessment

  • You do it on your own, with no help.
  • It has to be done in one sitting. If your internet drops or the screen freezes, you start again, so allow plenty of time.
  • You get your result straight away. It also shows on your myVicRoads dashboard, and VicRoads emails you.
  • Fail it and you’re locked out for 6 hours. Then you can try again.
  • You’ve got 12 months from enrolment to finish everything. After that you enrol again and pay the course fee.

Who can take it online

You need to be at least 15 years and 11 months old, live in Victoria and be medically fit to drive. You also can’t be disqualified from getting a learner permit for more than 12 months.

The course is in English only. A phone works, but VicRoads suggests a laptop or desktop. If you need another language, the in-person test is offered in 13 others, or with a free interpreter.

Looking for the answers?

There’s no official answer list, and the final assessment has to be your own work. What VicRoads does give you is a free practice test that it says is like the real one: 32 random questions with a 78% pass mark. Get one wrong and it points you to the part of the handbook that explains it. That’s a far better use of your time.

What it costs

As of October 2026, your first online attempt is free and each further attempt costs $28.70. The permit itself is free too. Fees can change, so check the VicRoads fees page before you enrol.
