Booking the VicRoads learner permit test

Most people don’t book anything. You enrol in the online test from your myVicRoads dashboard and start whenever you’re ready. Only the in-person test needs an appointment, and as of October 2026 VicRoads keeps that for people who need another language or don’t have a computer or internet.

Enrolling in the online test

There’s no time slot to pick. You can work through the course at your own pace, then sit the final assessment when you’ve got enough quiet time to do it in one go.

  1. Check you’re eligible: at least 15 years and 11 months old, living in Victoria and medically fit to drive.
  2. Set up a myVicRoads account if you don’t have one.
  3. Enrol in the Learner Permit Test Online from your dashboard. Your first attempt is free.
  4. Note the expiry date on your dashboard. You’ve got 12 months to finish the course and the final assessment.

Booking an in-person test

If you qualify, book through the Learner Permit Test page on the VicRoads website. The test is held at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, on a computer, and it’s offered in 13 languages other than English.

Need an interpreter because your language isn’t on the list? Interpreters are free, but you book that appointment at a Customer Service Centre rather than online.

Allow 45 minutes, and there may be a wait. You take the test and fill in your learner permit application at the same visit.

What an appointment costs

As of October 2026 the in-person test costs $50.80. That’s $28.70 for the test plus $22.10 for the appointment. Be careful about moving it: if you change your appointment, you pay the $22.10 appointment fee again when you rebook.

Picking up your permit after an online pass

Once you pass online, complete the learner permit application in myVicRoads. VicRoads emails you a QR code. Take it, with your original ID documents, to any Customer Service Centre. You don’t need an appointment for this visit.

Staff check your documents, test your eyesight and take your photo and signature. You need to be 16 to be issued the permit.
