How much does the Red Seal exam cost?

There's no national Red Seal fee. Your province or territory runs the exam and sets the price, and it depends on whether you're an apprentice or challenging with experience. As of October 2026, Skilled Trades Ontario charges $150 + HST to write. In B.C., an apprentice's first try is free and a challenger pays $120. Alberta's experienced-worker route costs $450 to apply.

Fees that catch people out

  • B.C. charges a rescheduling fee if you miss your exam or cancel within 30 days of it.
  • In Alberta, some trades also need a practical exam, with a fee that varies by trade.
  • In Ontario, if you pass through a Trade Equivalency Assessment, there's a separate fee to issue your Certificate of Qualification. Journeypersons in compulsory trades also pay a $60 + HST yearly renewal.
  • An Ontario Trade Equivalency reassessment, if you're turned down and have new evidence, costs $100 + HST.

What about prep courses?

The free material on red-seal.ca is all built around the exam, and it's what we'd start with. Paid prep courses at colleges can cost over $1,000. See our where-to-learn page for options and prices.
