Red Seal study guide: what to read

There isn't one Red Seal textbook. The exam is built from your trade's Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), or its National Occupational Analysis (NOA) in some trades, and both are free on red-seal.ca. Pair it with the free Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide and your trade's exam breakdown, and you know exactly what's tested.

The occupational standard is the exam

The standard breaks your trade into major work activities, then tasks, then sub-tasks. Every exam question is based on a sub-task.

Only Common Core sub-tasks are tested. A sub-task is Common Core when journeypersons do it in at least 70% of provinces and territories. Your standard marks which ones they are. Red Seal is clear that textbooks help, but the standard, not any textbook, is the basis of the exam.

Free official documents to download

  • Your trade's RSOS or NOA, from the trade's page on red-seal.ca.
  • The Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide, online or as a PDF.
  • Your trade's exam breakdown, which shows how many questions each task gets.
  • The self-assessment tool, to rate yourself on every task. Only you see the results.
  • Sample questions for your trade, written by the same people, in the same format as the real ones.
  • The formula sheet and acronym list for your trade. You'll get the same sheets at the exam.

Parts of the standard people skip

At the back of each standard there's a tools and equipment list, a glossary and an acronym list. Learn the names used there. The exam doesn't use brand names or slang. Also read the range of variables under each sub-task, which lists the items and terms the standard covers.

"Red Seal exam questions PDF"

The real exam questions are confidential. Red Seal says any site claiming to have them is either dishonest or breaking the law, and asks you to report it to your apprenticeship authority. Use practice questions to test your understanding, not to memorize answers, since outside practice tests are very unlikely to match the real exam.

Extra help from provinces

Alberta publishes exam counselling sheets for Red Seal exams, with the question count and topic breakdown. SkilledTradesBC has an exam prep video series and lists free math and textbook resources. Skilled Trades Ontario has its own Exam Preparation Guide.
