PreACT: the pre-ACT test for grades 8 to 10

PreACT, the pre-ACT test, is a family of tests from ACT for students in grades 8 to 10, given through schools. It has the same structure and content as the ACT and a report that predicts your ACT Composite. You don’t register for it yourself, so ask your school if it offers one.

The four pre-ACT tests

TestScore scale
PreACT1-35
PreACT Secure1-35
PreACT 9 Secure1-32
PreACT 8/91-30

All of them sit on the ACT’s 1 to 36 scale, but each tops out lower, matched to the grade it’s for.

What the scores tell you

Each report gives a predicted ACT Composite and US percentile ranks against other PreACT testers. ACT’s PreACT College Readiness Benchmarks for each grade and subject are the bar for a good score.

For 2025-26, the average PreACT Composite was 16.4 for 9th graders in the fall and 17.3 for 10th graders in the fall.

Getting your results

Your school gets them. For PreACT and PreACT 8/9, online results usually arrive within 10 business days after ACT receives the tests, plus two paper copies per student. PreACT Secure results come out once enough schools have tested. A free MyACT account lets you explore majors and careers based on your interests.
