How it works
- Go to the online knowledge test from the DMV’s instruction permit page and register. Your registration is good for 72 hours.
- Take the test on a desktop or laptop with a keyboard, mouse and webcam. The system needs a computer, not just a phone. If you’re 18 or older, you’ll answer identity check questions first.
- You get your pass or fail result straight away, plus an email with your next steps.
- Visit a DMV office to get the permit. Bring Form D1, your documents and the $15 fee, take the vision test, and if you’re under 18, bring your parent or guardian or a notarized Form 433.
Who can test online
As of October 2026, the test system’s FAQ says you must be an Alaska resident, at least 16 for the car (Class D) test, 18 for the motorcycle test and 20 for the alcohol awareness test. Those are the only three tests offered online.
Alaska’s permit age is 14, so if you’re 14 or 15 you’ll take the written test at a DMV office. The DMV’s fee list has no separate charge for testing at an office.
Retakes, time limit and language
You have 25 minutes. If you fail, or you’re disqualified for breaking the rules, you can try again the same day, up to four more times. Each try is another $11.50. After five fails online, you can’t test online again for a year, but you can still test at a DMV office, where you can retake a failed test the next day.
The Driver Manual says the online system offers several languages and audio playback. The test system’s FAQ only lists English, so check the options when you register. If you need a language that isn’t offered, ask your DMV office.
Practice online first
The DMV also has a free practice knowledge test online, and our 20-question practice test is written from the same manual. Neither one counts as the real test.
