ASVAB score requirements by branch

As of October 2026, you need an AFQT score of at least 31 to join the Army, Air Force or Marine Corps with a high school diploma, and 32 for the Coast Guard. The Air Force and Marine Corps want 50 if you have a GED. The Navy and Space Force say you need a qualifying score but don’t publish one number. Every branch uses the same ASVAB, so your score counts wherever you apply.

These are the figures on each branch’s own recruiting site as of October 2026. Branches can change them, so confirm with a recruiter before you test.

One test for every branch

There’s no separate Air Force ASVAB or Navy ASVAB. Every branch uses the same ten subtests, and your scores mean the same thing whichever recruiter scheduled you. What changes is the minimum each branch asks for and the line scores each of its jobs needs.

Scores can be used to enlist for up to two years from the test date.

If your score is under the minimum

  • You can retest one calendar month after your first test, and again one month after that. From then on, you wait six months each time.
  • Your most recent score is the one used, not your best, so study before you retest.
  • Army: with an AFQT of 21 or more, the Future Soldier Preparatory Course teaches the ASVAB subjects for up to 90 days and gives you chances to retest. With 31 to 49, a 30-day option gives you one chance to raise your score.
  • Navy: navy.com notes that some circumstances can affect how well you score, and says a recruiter can answer your questions.

The minimum isn’t the whole story

Meeting the AFQT minimum gets you in the door. Each job also needs certain line scores, which the branches build from your subtest scores. A score of 31 might qualify you to enlist but leave only a short list of jobs.

Our line scores page shows how each branch combines the subtests and gives examples of job minimums that the branches publish.
