CBEST and CSET study guides: the official ones are free

The official study guides are free on the CTC exams site. For the CBEST, that’s the test specifications plus a full-length practice test for each section. For CSET: Multiple Subjects, it’s a test guide, the subject matter requirements, sample questions and a practice test for each subtest. Start there, because they show exactly what’s tested.

Official CBEST materials

  • CBEST Test Specifications: every skill tested in Reading, Mathematics and Writing
  • Practice tests for Reading and Mathematics: 50 multiple-choice questions each, with an answer key and a worksheet that shows your score by skill area
  • Writing practice test: two essay topics, the official writing score scale and sample essays at different score levels

What the CBEST specifications cover

SectionSkill areas
ReadingCritical analysis and evaluation; comprehension and research skills
MathematicsEstimation, measurement and statistical principles; computation and problem solving; numerical and graphic relationships
WritingTwo essays: one analyzing a situation or statement, one about a personal experience

The math is practical: averages, percents, fractions, US units, simple equations, and reading tables and graphs. You won’t have a calculator, so practice working by hand.

Official CSET: Multiple Subjects materials

  • Test guide with the test structure and an annotated list of resources for each content area
  • Subject Matter Requirements, the official content specifications
  • A description and sample questions for each subtest, with sample responses and scoring information
  • A full practice test for each of Subtests I, II and III

Single subject CSETs

Each single subject CSET, such as Mathematics, English, Social Science or Physical Education, has its own page on the CTC exams site with its subtests, fees and preparation materials. Start from the CSET list on the site and open your subject.

Paid official prep

Pearson sells interactive Right Start courses for the CBEST and for CSET: Multiple Subjects. As of October 2026, they cost $35 for 30 days or $70 for 90 days, and you can renew in 30-day steps. Commercial study guide books exist too, but they aren’t official. Check that any book you buy matches the current tests, especially Multiple Subjects Subtest III, which changed in August 2022.
