Can you take the CBEST or CSET online?

Yes, for many of them. All three CBEST sections can be taken online with a remote proctor, and so can CSET: Multiple Subjects Subtests I and III and CSET: Writing Skills. CSET: Multiple Subjects Subtest II is test-center only. Online tests run in one-week windows each month, cost the same as at a center, and have no breaks.

What you need at home

  • A desktop or laptop. Tablets and touch screens can’t be used. A personal computer is better than a work one
  • One monitor only. If you use a laptop with an external monitor, you need an external keyboard, mouse and webcam, with the lid closed
  • A webcam and microphone, since a proctor watches the whole session
  • A private room where nobody comes in while you test
  • One current, government-issued photo ID printed in English, matching your registration

The rules on test day

  • Sign in between 30 minutes before and 15 minutes after your appointment time.
  • You take photos of your ID, your room and your face. They’re checked before your test starts.
  • You must accept the nondisclosure agreement within five minutes.
  • No paper and pencil. Keep your phone away unless the proctor allows it.
  • No breaks. Stay in view of the webcam, and don’t talk or mumble out loud.
  • A drink is fine, but no food.

Online or test center?

Online saves the trip and you can test from home, but the rules are strict and there are no breaks. That matters for long tests like CSET Subtest I, at 3 hours. At a test center, you can take restroom breaks (the clock keeps running), book any weekday or Saturday, and get preliminary CBEST Reading and Math results before you leave. Online, results simply arrive within 2 weeks for CBEST and 5 weeks for CSET.
