How much do the FE and PE exams cost?

As of October 2026, the FE exam costs $225 and most PE exams cost $400. You pay NCEES when you register, and you pay the full fee every time you take an exam. Your state board may charge its own application fee as well.

NCEES exam fees

ExamFee per attempt
FE (Fundamentals of Engineering)$225
PE (Principles and Practice of Engineering)$400
PE Structural, each of the 4 components$350

These are the fees in the NCEES Examinee Guide, in effect since January 1, 2024. NCEES takes Mastercard, Visa and American Express online. Examinees approved through a foreign entity pay an extra $25 fee.

Your state board’s fee

Some state licensing boards make you apply to them first and pay an application fee before you can register with NCEES. Others let you register directly. Later, when you apply for your license, the board charges a licensing fee too. Check your board’s website for its amounts.

Rescheduling, canceling and refunds

  • Rescheduling an appointment costs $50, paid to Pearson. You must do it at least 48 hours ahead.
  • Canceling an appointment also costs $50, paid to Pearson.
  • If you cancel your registration before you schedule, NCEES refunds the fee minus a $50 administrative fee.
  • Once approved, you have 12 months to test. If you don’t test or cancel in that time, you lose the fee.
  • If you can’t make it because of an emergency on the day, like a car accident or medical emergency, you may be able to reschedule free or get a refund. You need documentation.

What studying costs

The reference handbook is free to download in MyNCEES, and so are the exam specifications. NCEES sells official practice exams. Prep courses range a lot. For example, School of PE lists its FE Civil on-demand course at $349, and PrepFE’s question bank starts at $79.99 (as of October 2026).
