How much does the GED test cost?

Each state sets its own price, and you pay per subject. As of October 2026, GED.com lists $36 a subject in many states, so all four cost $144. Some states charge more, up to $50 a subject, and a few charge less or nothing at all. New York, Connecticut and West Virginia don’t charge for in-person testing. Online testing sometimes costs a little more than a test center.

You pay one subject at a time

You don’t have to pay for the whole GED at once. You pay for each subject when you schedule it on GED.com, by credit or debit card. Many people spread the cost over a few months by taking one subject at a time.

No card? GED Testing Service says some students use a free American Express Bluebird account, which you can load with cash at Walmart.

Retakes can cost less

At a test center, many states give you discounted retakes if you don’t pass a subject. The details are set by state. In California, for example, you get one discounted retake per subject and pay a $15 test center fee. In Texas you get two, each with a $16.25 test center fee, used within 365 days.

Discounted retakes aren’t offered for the online test. Online, a retake costs the full price.

Ways to test for free or less

  • Live in New York, Connecticut or West Virginia: in-person testing is free.
  • Several other states list free or discounted testing on GED.com, often through adult education programs and sometimes with conditions. Texas, for example, has a subsidy for eligible residents 21 and older through local adult education programs.
  • GEDWorks: some employers pay for GED prep and testing for their workers. Ask your HR department.
  • Adult education centers can tell you about local funding and free classes.

Optional costs: practice tests and prep

The official GED Ready practice test costs $7.99 a subject, or $25.99 for all four, on its GED.com page. You need a “Likely to Pass” score on it before you can book an online test, so budget for it if you plan to test at home. The free GED test previews cost nothing.
