Start with what’s free. GED Testing Service has free test previews in every subject, Khan Academy covers the skills at no cost, and many local adult education programs teach GED classes for free or very little. If you want more structure, the paid courses, apps and books below are the ones people actually use. We checked each one’s price and what’s free in October 2026.
Made by the people who write the real test, so the question types and screens match what you’ll see. Each preview is about a quarter of the length of the real test and has no time limit. The math one includes the formula sheet and an on-screen calculator. A good first step to see where you stand.

Khan Academy doesn’t have a GED course, but its own help center maps its free courses to all four GED subjects. It’s especially good for math: Arithmetic, Pre-algebra, Basic Geometry and Algebra 1 cover what’s on the test. Each Course Challenge (30 questions) shows you which lessons to study next. Not official GED material, but free and well made.

GED Ready is the official practice test. It’s half the length of the real test and tells you if you’re likely to pass, and you need a “Likely to Pass” score to book an online test. GED Live is live online classes with Kaplan teachers (English only). GED+ includes a personal bilingual advisor and covers your retakes. The GED & Me app is rated 4.8 from about 12,000 ratings on the App Store.

A full self-paced course for all four subjects, with more than 3,000 practice questions, a study plan, essays graded by people and support from advisors by phone, text and email. Available in English and Spanish. A good fit if you want a structured course and can’t get to a class.

A practice-question app covering all four subjects, with more than 1,000 questions and offline use. Rated 4.8 from about 180 ratings on the App Store. Several apps share this name, so check the developer is Krager Labs.

Plain, no-frills multiple-choice practice. Handy for extra questions, but it’s only multiple choice and the layout doesn’t look like the real computer test. Use it alongside the official previews, not instead of them.
Checked October 2026
A widely used prep book covering all four subjects, with practice tests and online videos (more in the Plus edition). Good if you study best from paper. Make sure you buy a recent edition.

GED.com lists more than 6,000 prep centers. Enter your city or zip code to find classes near you, or create a free GED.com account to see prep center contact details. Adult education programs at school districts, community colleges and libraries often run free classes, and some can help with test fees too. A teacher who can answer your questions makes a big difference, especially for math and the essay.
