Why there’s no percentage to aim for
Each candidate sees a different set of questions, and some questions are a little harder than others. CDR adjusts for that. If your set is slightly harder, you need fewer right answers to reach 25. If it’s slightly easier, you need more.
So nobody can turn the score into an exact percentage. On our practice test we use 70% as a target, but that’s our own benchmark, not a CDR number.
How the adaptive part works
The computer compares your answers with the passing standard as you go. It stops once it’s confident you’re above or below it, somewhere between 125 and 145 questions.
Only scored questions count. The 25 pretest questions are there so CDR can try out new items, and they don’t affect your result.
Your score report
Your score appears on screen at the end, and you get a printed report before you leave. It shows your total scaled score, the score needed to pass and two sub-scores: Food and Nutrition Sciences (domains I and II) and Food Service Systems/Management (domains III and IV).
The sub-scores don’t decide pass or fail. CDR says to read them with caution, because they’re based on fewer questions. They’re still useful for planning a retake.
Fails and incomplete exams
- If you answer fewer than 125 questions in 3 hours, you get a failing score of 2, meaning inconclusive.
- If you choose to stop early, the exam isn’t scored, you get no refund, and you must reauthorize with CDR.
- You can’t appeal a failing score or individual questions. CDR doesn’t release the questions or answers.
Retaking after a fail
You can test again after 45 calendar days, so your new appointment must be on day 46 or later. You must reauthorize with CDR and pay the fee again, or use a retake voucher if you bought the $350 bundle.
If keeping your job depends on passing sooner, CDR allows a one-time waiver of the 45-day wait with a letter from your employer. For people who become eligible on or after January 1, 2027, there’s a lifetime limit of eight attempts.
