Can you take the SIE exam online?

Yes. The SIE is open online to anyone with an open FINRA enrollment window. You take it at home or another private space through Prometric’s remote proctoring. It’s the same exam, the same 1 hour 45 minutes and the same $100 fee.

What you need

  • A computer with a movable external camera, such as a USB webcam, or an undocked laptop with a built-in camera. You must show a 360-degree view of your desk and room at check-in.
  • Prometric’s ProProctor app, installed ahead of time, and a passed system check.
  • A stable internet connection. Avoid streaming, gaming or social media on the same network during the exam.
  • If you use a work computer or network, ask your IT team first. Firewalls can block the app.

How to book online

Enroll with FINRA as usual, then choose an online appointment on Prometric’s scheduling page. You need an open, unscheduled enrollment window.

Already booked a test center? You must cancel that appointment before you can book online. Watch the cancellation deadlines, so you don’t pay a late fee.

Online versus a test center

Online saves the trip, but your room and equipment have to meet the rules, and a tech problem can be stressful. If your internet is shaky or you share a busy home, a test center may be the calmer choice. Reference materials aren’t allowed either way.

The Series exams are different

The Series 7 and other FINRA exams are online only with an approved accommodation, for example if you’re immunocompromised or live more than 150 miles from a test center. NASAA’s Series 63, 65 and 66 are online only by accommodation for candidates who are immunocompromised. Everyone else takes them at a Prometric test center.
