Can you do the boat licence test online?

Not in NSW: Transport for NSW doesn’t offer its boat licence test online. You book online, then sit it at a service centre or with an Authorised Training Provider. Victoria’s regulator says accredited providers can run the course online. WA, Queensland and Tasmania test you through approved providers, and WA’s assessment includes a trip on the water.

Online boat licence courses in Victoria

Safe Transport Victoria lets accredited training providers run the marine licence course online or in person, and you sit the provider’s test at the end. What happens after you pass is on the Victoria page.

What you can do online in NSW

You can book the knowledge test online with Service NSW, choose a service centre and a time, and take the free practice quizzes. The test itself happens at the centre. Once your licence is granted it shows in the Service NSW app straight away, and you can renew a general boat licence online later.

Queensland, WA and Tasmania

Queensland asks you to apply in person at a transport and motoring customer service centre or a QGAP office, with the statement of competency from your BoatSafe course. In WA the RST assessment includes a short boating trip with the assessor. In Tasmania you sit the licence test with your BoatSafe provider, and MAST runs a free online practice test.
