Australia · Hazard perception test

Can you do the hazard perception test online?

In Queensland, yes: the HPT is an online test you do on your own device. In NSW and WA, no. You sit it on a computer at a service centre. WA does have free sample clips online, so you can practise at home.

Queensland: the whole test is online

If you pass, you’ll get an email with what to do next. If you can’t do the test online, contact TMR on 13 23 80. The Indigenous Driver Licensing Unit can run an offline car test during community visits.

  1. Set up your online account and verify your email. The link is only valid for 24 hours.
  2. Enrol and pay $42.70 at service.transport.qld.gov.au/enrolinhpt.
  3. Use a laptop or desktop if you can. A phone is allowed only if you can see the screen clearly.
  4. Allow 15 to 30 minutes with a steady internet connection. You can’t save your progress and come back.
  5. Do the practice test first, as many times as you like. Then start the 25-clip test.

NSW: at a Service NSW centre

The NSW HPT is a touch-screen test on a computer at a service centre. You book online, but you can’t sit the test online. There’s no official online practice test either: Transport for NSW says the handbook is the way to prepare.

WA: at a service centre, with practice online

You sit the test at a DTMI service centre or regional agent. Before that, use the free sample tests on the Transport WA website. There are 4 car scenarios: turning right at an intersection, slowing for an intersection, overtaking on a country road and slowing while going straight ahead. WA suggests using a computer rather than a phone.

Other states

We couldn’t read VicRoads’ or South Australia’s official pages when we checked in October 2026, so Victoria and SA aren’t covered here. Tasmania, the ACT and the NT aren’t covered either. If you live there, check your own state or territory’s transport website.
