Canada · Citizenship test

How much does the Canadian citizenship test cost?

The test itself is free. There’s no separate test fee. You pay once, when you apply for citizenship. As of October 2026 that’s $653 for an adult and $100 for a child under 18.

Citizenship application fees

WhoFeeWhat it includes
Adult (18 or older)$653$530 processing fee plus the $123 right of citizenship fee
Child (under 18)$100Processing fee only

The test, and up to 3 tries at it, are covered by that fee.

The right of citizenship fee can come back to you

The $123 right of citizenship fee went up from $119.75 on March 31, 2026. If an adult’s application isn’t approved, IRCC refunds that part.

When you’d pay again

IRCC doesn’t list any fee for retakes or for the hearing you’re invited to after 3 fails. But if you fail the hearing, your application is refused, and you’ll have to apply again and pay the fees again. The same goes if your application is closed because you missed your test twice without telling IRCC.

Studying is free

You don’t have to buy a book or a course. Discover Canada, the official guide, is free online, as a PDF, as an eBook and as audio. Many libraries and settlement agencies also run free prep classes.

Check before you pay

The right of citizenship fee can change each year on March 31. Look at IRCC’s fee list on the day you apply.
