Taking the Canadian citizenship test online

Most people take the citizenship test online, at a time that suits them inside a 30-day window. You can do it from anywhere, even outside Canada. You’ll need a computer or tablet with a webcam, and you can’t use a phone.

What you need

  • A desktop, laptop or tablet with a webcam
  • Chrome or Safari. Don’t use Chrome on an iPad
  • Not a mobile phone, not a Microsoft Surface Pro, and no VPN
  • A reliable internet connection and good lighting
  • Your PR card (even if it’s expired), or valid photo ID with your signature, like a driver’s licence or health card
  • Your application number and UCI from the invitation

How to start

  1. Wait for your invitation. You can’t sign in before your window opens.
  2. Sign in with your application number and UCI, accept the terms, and ask for your test link.
  3. Open the link soon. It stops working after 15 minutes. If it expires, sign in again for a new one.
  4. Take a photo of yourself and your ID, then start the 45-minute test.

Rules during the test

Breaking these rules, or a technical problem, can make your test invalid.

  • Be alone, in the same place where you took your photos
  • Keep your face in view. The webcam takes random photos to check it’s you
  • Close other tabs, windows and programs
  • No phone, notes or study guide, and don’t use the browser’s back button
  • Move anything with personal details, like diplomas, out of the background

After you submit

Your score shows straight away, but it’s unofficial until an officer reviews it. You won’t get an email copy and you can’t sign back in to see it, so print the page or save it before you close it. If you failed, you can sign in again for another try while your window is still open.

Practise online first

The best online practice is a timed run of 20 questions, so the real format feels normal. Try our free practice test, then go back to Discover Canada for anything you missed.
