A study plan for the Class 5 knowledge test

  1. Read MPI’s Driver’s Handbook. The online version uses text and videos, and MPI’s testing page tells you to review it.
  2. Learn the signs by shape and colour in the Signs and Signals chapter. Shape alone tells you a lot: a diamond warns and an octagon means stop.
  3. Write down the numbers as you read, such as speed limits, following distance, and how far to stop from a school bus.
  4. Try an MPI quiz and go back to the handbook for every question you miss.
  5. Book the test when you get the quiz questions right without looking back at the handbook.

Is the MPI quiz the same as the real test?

No. MPI’s Driving Quizzes are multiple-choice quizzes for each class of Manitoba licence. You pick the class and how many questions you want, and at the end you see your score and a summary of each answer.

MPI says they check that you understand the main ideas, and the wording may differ from what you study. Passing an MPI quiz doesn’t count as passing the real test.

Driver Z, MPI’s high school driver education

Driver Z is a one-year program for Manitoba high school students. You do lessons online, go to a class once a week, in person or virtually, and have one in-car lesson a week once you hold your learner licence. You also practise for at least 45 hours with a supervising driver and finish with a one-hour readiness assessment.

It’s the only way to get a Class 5 learner licence at 15½. You’re eligible if you’ll be 15½ by the date of the Driver Z knowledge test, which MPI says is usually five weeks after the course starts. Driver Z isn’t required, and adults can take lessons at a driving school instead.

Driving schools with an MPI permit

MPI says every new driver should think about lessons from a driving school with a valid permit, and every driving school in Manitoba must hold one. Ask the school or instructor to show you theirs.

You don’t need lessons to take the knowledge test. They count later: after three failed road tests, MPI asks for at least five hours of lessons from a permitted school before you can book again.

How to choose

Studying on your own? The handbook and MPI’s quizzes are the two things MPI itself points you to, and MPI shows no charge for either online. Apps add extra questions and mock tests, but none of them comes from MPI, so check anything that surprises you against the handbook.

In high school and keen to start at 15½? Look at Driver Z first. Not in high school? MPI points adults to its driving school finder for training.
