REx-PN practice questions, study guides and prep

Start with the free exam preview from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), which wrote the Regulatory Exam for Practical Nurses (REx-PN). It has 125 items similar to the real ones, in English or French. Other REx-PN practice questions come from private companies, and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) says those companies don’t have access to the exam’s question bank. Neither CNO nor the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) endorses a prep course.

Where do official REx-PN practice questions come from?

NCSBN’s Prepare page offers the exam preview as a free download, and CNO and BCCNM also call it free. It’s a static set that you download. It isn’t scored, and it doesn’t predict whether you’ll pass. Its 125 items won’t appear on the exam, so a good result on the preview tells you about those items and nothing more.

Two more official resources give you practice of a different kind:

  • The candidate tutorial, which shows you Pearson’s exam software and how to answer each item type
  • The test plan, which includes sample items and, in an appendix, item-writing exercises meant for educators

NCSBN’s Prepare page lists no paid practice exam. CNO’s resource list also mentions “a practice exam” in English and French, and that link goes to the home page of NCSBN’s REx-PN site, where the exam preview is the download on offer.

Does the REx-PN exam preview come with answers?

None of NCSBN, CNO or BCCNM says whether the preview comes with an answer key. Their pages describe what it’s for, not what’s in the file, so open the download to check.

Be careful with sets of “answers” from anywhere else. NCSBN’s rules for candidates ban sharing or rebuilding exam items, even from memory.

The REx-PN study guide: use the test plan

The closest thing to an official study guide is the test plan. BCCNM says it’s the same guide used by the people who write and review the exam questions. It defines each client needs area and lists the nursing activities behind it.

Two plans are published, so pick by your exam date. The 2022 plan applies through December 31, 2026, and the 2027 plan from January 1, 2027. BCCNM says to prepare from the plan in effect on the day you write.

You’ll see a lot of terms, but only some lab values need memorizing. The 2027 plan names these:

  • Arterial blood gases (pH, PO2, PCO2, SaO2, HCO3)
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine and glucose
  • Total cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1C)
  • Hematocrit, hemoglobin and platelets
  • International normalized ratio (INR), prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time and activated partial thromboplastin time
  • Potassium, sodium and white blood cell count

CNO and BCCNM say all other values are given to you in the question.

Can anyone sell you the real REx-PN questions?

No. BCCNM’s wording is plain: no third party has access to the REx-PN question bank, and you should be wary of anyone claiming they do. CNO says the same about course sellers, and adds that it doesn’t know whether their courses have helped applicants prepare.

This matters beyond wasted money. NCSBN’s candidate rules say disclosing exam items before, during or after the exam is prohibited and can lead to criminal referral. Your result can be cancelled, and your regulator can take other action, up to denying your registration.

How to build your REx-PN exam prep

CNO and BCCNM both say your nursing program covers what’s tested, so this is mostly about finding gaps and learning the format.

  1. Read the test plan for your exam date and mark the activities you feel least sure of.
  2. Take the candidate tutorial so you know how each item type works on screen.
  3. Work through the exam preview, then go back to the areas where you struggled.
  4. Review CNO’s practice documents if you’re writing in Ontario. CNO also suggests a nursing peer support group, and a language course if you aren’t fully fluent in English or French.
  5. If you buy a book or question bank, check that it matches the plan for your exam date, and treat its score as that seller’s own measure.

Already wrote it and didn’t pass? Your Candidate Performance Report shows which areas to work on first.
