Where can you read the NZ motorcycle road code?

NZTA publishes the official New Zealand road code for motorcyclists on its website, with each topic on a page of its own. Its theory test page says you can also buy the road code at most bookstores and driver licensing agents.

Want something to download? NZTA’s licence pages link two PDFs, the ‘Getting your motorcycle licence’ brochure and Factsheet 28, Learning to ride. Both are about getting your licence.

Two chapters on gear, alcohol and drugs

Two of its chapters cover gear and the alcohol and drug rules:

  • Wearing the right gear: helmets and the approved safety standards, eye protection and protective clothing
  • Alcohol and drug limits: the limits under 20 and at 20 or over, drugs, police tests and penalties

Their key points are in the guide’s topic list.

A study plan for the motorcycle theory test

You could work through it like this:

  1. Read the road code for motorcyclists, one topic at a time.
  2. Learn the numbers riders need: the alcohol limits, the engine sizes under the learner approved motorcycle scheme (LAMS) and the hours learners must not ride.
  3. Try the 20 questions here, then the road code’s own theory test questions.
  4. Book your theory test at a driver licensing agent once your handling test is done.
