Free 11 Plus papers and familiarisation booklets

The best free 11+ papers come from the people who write or run the tests. Buckinghamshire Council publishes a familiarisation booklet, SEAG has four practice papers with answer keys for Northern Ireland, and GL Assessment offers about 10 hours of free familiarisation PDFs. Start with the one for your area.

Buckinghamshire: the familiarisation booklet

It explains what the Secondary Transfer Test is like, gives advice and includes sample questions. Children at state-funded Buckinghamshire primary schools and partner schools get a printed copy. Everyone else can download it as a PDF.

Children also sit a practice test a couple of days before the real one. It isn’t marked, but it gets them used to the answer sheet.

Northern Ireland: SEAG Practice Papers 1 to 4

SEAG publishes four practice papers, each with an answer sheet, in English and in Gaeilge. A parents’ guide with answer keys was revised in September 2026. They’re free to download, and SEAG doesn’t sell or endorse any other practice papers.

GL Assessment: free familiarisation materials

GL Assessment sets the 11+ in several areas, including Buckinghamshire. Its free PDFs cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, maths and verbal skills, about 10 hours in all, for printing at home. GL also sells practice packs. A verbal reasoning pack with three papers costs £11.99, or £31.99 for all three packs.

GL warns that your local test’s timings and number of questions may be different from its materials.

Other areas

If you live somewhere else, such as Kent, look on your county council’s website or the grammar schools’ admissions pages. Most areas that test publish their own familiarisation material, and it’s the closest you’ll get to the real paper.
