How to get a fee reduction
College Board takes $37 off each exam for students with significant financial need, so a $99 exam drops to $62. Some states add their own funding, which can bring the cost lower still.
You don’t apply on the College Board site. Ask your AP coordinator or school counselor. They know whether you qualify and how your state handles it.
Order on time to avoid extra fees
Schools order exams by November 13. If your exam is ordered between November 14 and March 12, there’s a $40 late fee on top. The late fee doesn’t apply to courses that start after November 13 or to students who transfer in.
If an exam is ordered for you after the November deadline and you then decide not to take it, you’re charged $40. That applies even if you had a fee reduction.
Paying, and sending scores
You can’t pay for AP Exams on the College Board website. Your school collects the money, so ask your AP coordinator how and when to pay.
Your score report includes one free score send, if you choose a college by June 20. Extra score reports cost $15 each.
Studying can be free
The course and exam description for every subject, released free-response questions, AP Daily videos and Bluebook test previews are all free from College Board. Khan Academy has free AP courses too. Books and paid websites are optional.
