How it works

Four timed sections, one computer test, and a score your school compares with its own cutoff

  1. The TEAS is a computer test with four timed sections: Reading, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage.
  2. Reading has 45 questions in 55 minutes. Math has 38 in 57 minutes. Science has 50 in 60 minutes. English has 37 in 37 minutes.
  3. Twenty of the 170 questions are unscored pretest items. You can’t tell which ones they are, so treat every question as real.
  4. Most questions are multiple choice. Some are select all that apply, fill in the blank, ordered response or hot spot.
  5. There’s a calculator built into the exam. You can’t bring your own.
  6. You get one 10-minute break after the Math section.
  7. Your score report shows a total score from 0% to 100%, section scores, and an academic preparedness level from Developmental to Exemplary.

Topics

What’s on the test

01

Reading: key ideas and details

Finding the main idea, specific facts and the order of events in short texts. It’s 15 of the 39 scored Reading questions.

Key points (4)
  • The main idea covers the whole passage. A choice that covers only one detail is too narrow.
  • Answer from what the text says, not from what you already know about the topic.
  • Signal words like first, then and afterward show the order of steps.
  • Read the question before the passage so you know what you’re looking for.
02

Reading: craft, structure and ideas

Fact versus opinion, word meaning in context, the author’s purpose, and drawing conclusions across texts. Together, Craft and Structure (9) and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (15) make up 24 scored questions.

Key points (4)
  • A fact can be checked. An opinion is a judgment, often signaled by words like best, worst or most.
  • To work out a word, swap each choice into the sentence and see which keeps it logical.
  • Authors write to inform, to persuade, to entertain or to explain how to do something.
  • An inference must be supported by the text, even if the text doesn’t say it outright.
03

Math: numbers and algebra

Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions and one-variable equations, mostly in real-life problems. It’s 18 of the 34 scored Math questions.

Key points (4)
  • Fraction to decimal: divide the top by the bottom. Decimal to percent: multiply by 100.
  • Find a rate per one unit first (per hour, per tablet), then scale it up.
  • Solve an equation by undoing operations in reverse order, then check your answer.
  • The TEAS has a calculator built into the exam. You can’t bring your own.
04

Math: measurement and data

Unit conversions, geometry, and reading tables and graphs with basic statistics. It’s 16 of the 34 scored Math questions.

Key points (4)
  • 1 kg is about 2.2 lb, 1 inch is 2.54 cm, and 1 L is 1,000 mL.
  • Mean is the total divided by the count. Median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted.
  • When converting to a smaller unit, the number gets bigger, so multiply.
  • Area of a rectangle is length × width. Area of a circle is π × radius².
05

Science: anatomy and physiology

The body’s systems and the terms used to describe where things are. At 18 questions, it’s the biggest single part of the scored Science section.

Key points (4)
  • The left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body through the aorta.
  • Gas exchange happens in the alveoli of the lungs.
  • Most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine mainly absorbs water.
  • Proximal means closer to the trunk, distal means farther away.
06

Science: biology and chemistry

Cells, genetics, macromolecules, microorganisms, atoms, reactions, solutions and pH. Biology has 9 scored questions and chemistry has 8.

Key points (4)
  • Mitochondria make most of a cell’s ATP. Ribosomes build proteins.
  • Two carriers (Aa × Aa) have a 25% chance of a recessive (aa) offspring.
  • pH 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above 7 is basic.
  • An atom’s atomic number is its number of protons.
07

Science: scientific reasoning

Measurement tools, the scientific method, and using evidence to explain and predict. It’s 9 scored questions.

Key points (3)
  • The independent variable is the one you change. The dependent variable is the one you measure.
  • A control group gets no treatment, so you have something to compare with.
  • A hypothesis must be testable.
08

English and language usage

Spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, tone and word parts. The section has 33 scored questions in 37 minutes, so pace matters.

Key points (4)
  • A comma alone can’t join two complete sentences. Use a period, a semicolon, or a comma with and, but or so.
  • Words like each, every and neither are singular and take a singular verb.
  • Hyper- means above or too much. Hypo- means below or too little.
  • You get about one minute per question in this section.

Try 20 TEAS-style questions

The real TEAS has 170 questions across Reading, Math, Science and English. Here are 20 original questions in the same style, mixed across all four. We use 70%, so 14 right, as a practice target. That’s our own goal, not an ATI pass mark, because each school sets its own score. After each answer you can ask the tutor to explain it another way.

Question 1 of 20

Read the notice: “The clinic will be closed on Monday for staff training. Patients with appointments that day will be called to reschedule. Prescription refills requested before Friday at noon will be ready on Tuesday.” A patient asks for a refill on Thursday morning. When will it be ready?

Sample of the TEAS: same format, 20 questions.

Test day

What to bring, or have ready at home

  • A physical, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. The name must match your ATI account exactly. Photos and printouts aren’t accepted.

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the ATI TEAS?

There are 170 questions in 209 minutes. Reading has 45 questions in 55 minutes, Math 38 in 57 minutes, Science 50 in 60 minutes, and English and Language Usage 37 in 37 minutes. Twenty of the 170 are unscored pretest questions, and you can’t tell which ones, so you’re scored on 150.

What is a passing score on the ATI TEAS?

There isn’t one. ATI says each school sets its own cut score, so check the admissions page for every program you apply to. Your report gives a total score from 0% to 100% and a preparedness level. ATI says most schools will want you at Proficient or above. On Version 7, Proficient starts at 58.7%, but some programs ask for more.

How much does the ATI TEAS cost?

As of October 2026, it’s $120 plus sales tax if you take it with ATI’s online proctor or with PSI. If you test through a school, the school sets the price, and it may be higher or lower. One transcript is included. Extra transcripts cost $29.99 each. Registrations aren’t refundable.

Can I take the ATI TEAS online?

Yes. You can test at home with an ATI proctor, with your school’s remote proctor, or through PSI. You need a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone, and a quiet, private room. Not every school accepts remote scores, so check before you register.

How do I schedule the ATI TEAS?

Register on atitesting.com and pick a format: online with ATI, online or in person through a school, or PSI. You choose your date when you register. For PSI, you pay ATI first and then book your date with PSI. Rescheduling an exam booked on atitesting.com costs $15 and must be done at least 48 hours ahead.

How many times can I take the ATI TEAS?

ATI doesn’t limit how many times you take it, but your school might. Many programs cap attempts or ask you to wait between tests. Each retake is a new registration at full price. Every attempt shows on your ATI record, even one you don’t finish.

All 20 practice questions with answersA printable list of the practice test above
  1. Read the notice: “The clinic will be closed on Monday for staff training. Patients with appointments that day will be called to reschedule. Prescription refills requested before Friday at noon will be ready on Tuesday.” A patient asks for a refill on Thursday morning. When will it be ready?

Tuesday Thursday morning is before Friday at noon, so the refill falls under the last sentence: it will be ready on Tuesday. The clinic is closed on Monday, so Monday can’t be right.

  2. Read the passage: “Handwashing is one of the simplest ways to stop the spread of infection. Germs from unwashed hands can get into food and drinks, and onto surfaces such as door handles. Washing with soap for at least 20 seconds removes far more germs than rinsing with water alone.” Which statement best gives the main idea?

Washing your hands well is a simple, effective way to limit infection. The first sentence states the main idea, and the other two sentences support it. They explain how germs spread and why soap works better than water alone.

  3. Read the directions: “To take the medicine, first shake the bottle well. Then measure 10 mL with the dosing cup. Take the dose with food, and rinse the cup with warm water afterward.” What should you do right after shaking the bottle?

Measure 10 mL with the dosing cup The word “Then” links the second step to the first. After shaking, you measure 10 mL. Taking the dose and rinsing the cup come later.

  4. Which statement is an opinion rather than a fact?

The new wing is the most welcoming part of the hospital. “Most welcoming” is a personal judgment. Different people could disagree, and you can’t prove it. The other three can be checked with records, a count or the visitor rules.

  5. “The nurse’s explanation was so lucid that even the youngest patient understood the procedure.” In this sentence, what does lucid mean?

Clear and easy to understand The sentence says the explanation was so lucid that even a young child understood it. That only makes sense if lucid means clear.

  6. What is 3/8 written as a percentage?

    37.5% Divide 3 by 8 to get 0.375. To turn a decimal into a percentage, multiply by 100: 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.

  7. Solve for x: 4x − 7 = 21

    7 Add 7 to both sides to get 4x = 28. Then divide both sides by 4, so x = 7. Check: 4 × 7 − 7 = 21.

  8. A patient drinks 240 mL of water every 2 hours. At this rate, how much will the patient drink in 9 hours?

    1,080 mL First find the hourly rate: 240 ÷ 2 = 120 mL an hour. Then multiply by 9: 120 × 9 = 1,080 mL.

  9. A newborn weighs 2.5 kg. Using 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb, about how much does the baby weigh in pounds?

5.5 lb Going from kilograms to pounds, you multiply by 2.2, because each kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. 2.5 × 2.2 = 5.5 lb.

  10. Five patients have these resting heart rates, in beats per minute: 72, 80, 68, 90, 80. What is the mean heart rate?

    78 Add the values: 72 + 80 + 68 + 90 + 80 = 390. Divide by the number of values: 390 ÷ 5 = 78.

  11. Which chamber of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood out to the body?

Left ventricle Oxygen-rich blood comes back from the lungs into the left atrium and then the left ventricle. The left ventricle pumps it through the aorta to the rest of the body. That’s why its wall is the thickest.

  12. Where does most absorption of nutrients from food take place?

Small intestine The small intestine is long and lined with villi, tiny finger-like folds that give it a huge surface area. Most nutrients pass into the blood there.

  13. Which term correctly completes the sentence? “The wrist is ____ to the elbow.”

Distal Distal means farther from where a limb attaches to the trunk. The wrist is farther from the shoulder than the elbow is, so the wrist is distal to the elbow.

  14. Which pH value shows the most acidic solution?

2 On the pH scale, 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above 7 is basic. The lower the number, the more acidic the solution, so pH 2 is the most acidic.

  15. In a plant, purple flowers (P) are dominant over white flowers (p). Two plants that are both Pp are crossed. What is the chance that one of their offspring has white flowers?

25% A Punnett square for Pp × Pp gives PP, Pp, Pp and pp. Only pp shows the recessive white color. That’s 1 out of 4, or 25%.

  16. A student wants to know whether the amount of light affects plant growth. She gives three groups of the same kind of plant 2, 4 and 8 hours of light a day, keeps everything else the same, and measures their height after 3 weeks. What is the independent variable?

Hours of light each day The independent variable is the one the experimenter changes on purpose. Here she changes the hours of light. Plant height is what she measures, so it’s the dependent variable.

  17. Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

The patient’s family arrived early; they waited in the lobby. The sentence has two complete thoughts. A semicolon can join them, and “patient’s” needs an apostrophe to show the family belongs to the patient.

  18. Choose the word that correctly completes the sentence: “Each of the nurses ____ a name badge.”

has The subject is “each”, which is singular. “Of the nurses” is a phrase that describes it. A singular subject takes the singular verb “has”.

  19. In medical words such as hypertension and hyperactive, what does the prefix hyper- mean?

Above normal or too much Hyper- means over, above or too much. Hypertension is blood pressure that’s higher than normal.

  20. Which word is spelled correctly?

occurrence “Occurrence” is correct, with a double c, a double r and -ence at the end. The others should be receive, separate and definitely.
