How the test is split up
| Section | Questions | Time | What it covers (scored questions) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 45 (6 unscored) | 55 min | Key ideas and details (15), craft and structure (9), integration of knowledge and ideas (15) |
| Math | 38 (4 unscored) | 57 min | Numbers and algebra (18), measurement and data (16) |
| Science | 50 (6 unscored) | 60 min | Anatomy and physiology (18), biology (9), chemistry (8), scientific reasoning (9) |
| English and Language Usage | 37 (4 unscored) | 37 min | Conventions of standard English (12), knowledge of language (11), vocabulary and writing (10) |
Anatomy and physiology is the biggest single area, so give it more time if science isn’t your strength.
What each section asks you to do
- Reading: summarize a passage, find details, follow directions, read charts, tell fact from opinion, work out words from context, and judge an argument.
- Math: convert fractions, decimals and percentages, solve one-variable equations, work with ratios and proportions, read graphs, use basic statistics, find geometric quantities, and convert between metric and US units.
- Science: the body’s systems, cells, genetics and Mendel’s laws, macromolecules, microorganisms, atoms, reactions, solutions, acids and bases, and the scientific method.
- English: spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, writing for an audience, organizing a paragraph, and word parts like prefixes and roots.

A free way to plan your study
After the test, your score report lists Topics to Review, with a chapter of the Study Manual next to each one. ATI’s sample report shows the full list, so you can work through it before you test.
Allow time. ATI recommends at least six weeks of preparation.
How your score is reported
| Level | Total score (Version 7) |
|---|---|
| Developmental | 0.0% to 40.0% |
| Basic | 40.7% to 58.0% |
| Proficient | 58.7% to 79.3% |
| Advanced | 80.0% to 91.3% |
| Exemplary | 92.0% to 100.0% |
You get a total score from 0% to 100%, adjusted for how hard your test form was, plus a score for each section. The section scores don’t add up to the total. Your total also gets an academic preparedness level:
- There’s no ATI pass mark. Each school sets its own cut score, and ATI says most will want Proficient or above.
- Scores are usually valid for two years, but your school decides.
- ATI sets no limit on attempts. Your school may.
