Can you take the bar exam online?

No. As of October 2026 the bar exam is taken in person at a proctored test site. You type the written parts on your own laptop using secure exam software, but you can’t sit it from home. The MPRE is in person too, at Pearson test centers. You can apply, study and practice online.

How the computer part works

  • NextGen: you take the whole exam on your own laptop at an in-person, proctored site, in a secure testing browser.
  • California: the written sessions use ExamSoft on your own laptop. The 200 MBE questions are answered on a paper Scantron sheet with a No. 2 pencil.
  • Legacy UBE states: rules vary, so check your agency’s instructions for laptops and software.

What you can do online

  • Apply to your state’s bar admission agency and pay the fee.
  • Register for the MPRE and book your Pearson appointment.
  • Try NCBE’s free MBE sample questions and NextGen sample questions, and preview the NextGen exam software.
  • Download California’s past essay questions and performance tests, free back to 2012.
  • Get your results through your agency’s applicant portal.

Practice like the real thing

The MBE gives you about 1.8 minutes a question, with no scheduled breaks inside each 3-hour session. So once you know the law, practice in timed blocks of 100 questions. For essays and performance tests, type your answers under time, because that’s how you’ll write them on the day.
