Bar exam study guide: the official materials

There’s no single official bar exam book. The official guides are NCBE’s subject outlines and sample questions for each exam, plus your state’s own pages. If you’re sitting in California, its free past essays and performance tests go back to 2012. Start by checking which exam you’ll take, because the legacy UBE and NextGen have different materials.

For the legacy UBE and California’s MBE

The MBE covers seven subjects, with 25 scored questions each. NCBE’s MEE page lists the essay subjects, and its MPT page explains the file-and-library tasks. Each has free samples.

For the NextGen exam

NextGen tests eight foundational subjects: business associations, civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and constitutional protections of the accused, evidence, real property and torts. It also tests lawyering skills like research, writing and client counseling.

From July 2026 through February 2028, family law and trusts and estates also show up in skills questions, with the legal materials provided. The free content scope outlines say exactly what can be tested.

For the California Bar Exam

California’s essays can cover 13 subjects, including community property, professional responsibility, remedies, trusts, and wills and succession, which the MBE doesn’t test. Practice with real past questions and the selected answers the State Bar publishes.

Paid official practice

NCBE sells real past questions. For the legacy UBE, a full MBE practice exam is $100 and a 500-question MBE bundle is $200. MEE and MPT bundles are $50 each. For NextGen, a simulated exam is $110 and the complete bundle is $325.
