How much does the CPA Exam cost?

In states that use NASBA’s CPA Portal, each section costs $268.59 as of October 2026, so all four come to $1,074.36. On top of that you pay your state’s application fee and, the first time, an education evaluation fee. In New York, for example, that’s $96 each. Fees aren’t refunded.

Fees as of October 2026

FeeAmount
Each exam section$268.59
All four sections$1,074.36
Exam application, New York or Pennsylvania$96
Exam application, Washington$103
Education evaluation (first time), NY, PA or WA$96
Testing outside the US, per section$390 extra ($460 in India)

These come from NASBA’s state pages for New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. Other states charge different application fees. California, Texas and a few others don’t use the NASBA portal and set their own fees, so check your board.

Rescheduling can cost extra

  • 61 days or more before your appointment: free to change.
  • 5 to 60 days before: you pay a fee straight to Prometric.
  • 2 to 5 days before: you pay the full Prometric seat fee for that section.
  • Less than 24 hours before: you can’t change it. You have to contact your board and register again.

Score reviews and appeals

If you fail and want your score checked, a score review costs $240. It confirms your answers were scored correctly but doesn’t regrade them. An appeal costs $550 plus $100 per question and takes place in Nashville. NASBA says no score has ever changed because of an appeal. Some states, including California and Texas, don’t allow appeals.

Fees aren’t refundable

If your Notice to Schedule expires before you test, you lose the section fee and have to pay again. In extreme cases, you can ask NASBA for an extension or partial refund with its Exception to Policy form.

The bigger cost is usually prep

Review courses typically cost about $2,000 to $3,500 at sale prices. The AICPA’s Blueprints and sample test are free. See our where to learn page for a comparison.
