Can you take the CPA Exam online?

No. As of October 2026 there’s no at-home version. The CPA Exam is a computer-based test, but you take it in person at a Prometric test center. What you can do online is apply, pay, view your Notice to Schedule, book with Prometric and get your scores.

Where you can test

You can test at any Prometric center in the 54 US jurisdictions where the exam is given, whichever state you applied in. There’s no extra fee for testing in another state, except Guam.

You can also test in some countries outside the US, such as England, India, Japan and the UAE, for an extra $390 per section, or $460 in India. A few states, including Alabama, Idaho and North Carolina, don’t allow international testing.

What you do online

  • Apply and pay through your board or NASBA’s CPA Portal.
  • View your Notice to Schedule.
  • Book and change your Prometric appointment.
  • Get your scores in the CPA Portal or the NASBA CPA Mobile app.
  • Take the AICPA’s free sample test, which runs in your browser.

Practice on the real software

The AICPA sample test is a shorter version of the exam on the same software, with questions from all six sections. It takes up to two hours. It isn’t scored, but you can check the answers. It may look a little different from the test center version.
