Can you take the NCLEX online?

No. The NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN are only given in person, on a computer at a Pearson VUE test center. There’s no at-home or remote option. You can still do most of the process online: register, pay, book your appointment, try the official tutorial and buy quick results.

What you can do online

  • Register and pay the fee through your Pearson VUE account.
  • Schedule, reschedule or cancel your appointment, at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Try the free NCLEX Candidate Tutorial, which uses the real exam software.
  • Download the test plans, the Sample Pack and the Exam Preview from NCLEX.com.
  • Buy Quick Results for $7.95, two business days after the exam, if your board takes part.

It’s a computer exam, though

Everything at the test center happens on screen. You get an on-screen calculator and an erasable note board. Handheld calculators and all personal electronics are banned, and you’ll be scanned before you go in.

At check-in, the center takes a palm vein scan, your signature and a photo. You also sign a Candidate Statement on screen.

Breaks and timing

You have 5 hours in total. Optional breaks are offered after about 2 hours and again after about 3½ hours. The clock keeps running during every break, and you get a palm vein scan when you leave and when you come back. Arrive at least 30 minutes early.

Practicing online

Online question banks are where most people do their practice. Pick one that includes six-question case studies, since every real exam has three of them. NCSBN’s free Sample Pack has five official ones, three for the RN exam and two for the PN.

Rules and fees can change, so check the official site before your test.
