How long does a notary license last?
The official Utah, Louisiana and Hawaii pages don't give a term. For any other state, check your state's notary office.
| State | Term | When you can renew |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 4 years | Within 90 days before it expires |
| California | 4 years | Take the exam at least 6 months before it expires, and no more than 12 months before |
| North Carolina | 5 years | No earlier than 10 weeks before it expires |
| Pennsylvania | 4 years | Before it expires, to avoid the exam |
| Colorado | 4 years | Up to 90 days before it expires |
| Connecticut | 5 years | From 90 days before to 90 days after it expires |
Notary renewal in New York
- Log in to New York Business Express, find your notary record and start the renewal from My Dashboard.
- Complete a new Oath of Office, which is required every time you renew.
- Pay the renewal fee online. It's the same as a first application.
- Wait for your commission card by email. If something's missing, the Department emails you.
If your commission has been expired for 6 months or less, the application guidance says you may still be able to renew. If you've changed your name, sign the renewal with your new name.
Notary renewal in California
You sit the exam again. To avoid a break between commissions, the handbook says to test at least six months before yours expires, and a pass stays valid for one year. A 3-hour refresher course is enough only if you apply before your current commission expires; after that, you need the full 6-hour course again. The new commission won't be sent more than 30 days before the old one ends.
How does notary renewal work in other states?
- North Carolina: submit a new application and pass the written exam, which renewing notaries can take online, unless you're a State Bar member. If you apply within a year after your commission expires, you also take the course unless the Secretary waives it.
- Pennsylvania: take the 3-hour course every time. The exam is only needed if your commission has expired, even by one day. Record your bond and oath within 45 days of the new term.
- Colorado: complete approved training and pass the online exam again. If your commission has expired, you still file a renewal rather than a new application.
- Connecticut: the office mails a PIN for fast-track renewal about 90 days before your commission expires.
