How should you study for the notary exam?
- Read your state's booklet once all the way through. In New York it's the Notary Public License Law, dated September 2026.
- List every fee, time limit and number in it, such as how long records must be kept.
- Learn the definitions section until you can explain each one in your own words: acknowledgment, affidavit, jurat, venue and the rest.
- Go over what a notary must not do, like giving legal advice or notarizing for someone who isn't there in person.
- Answer practice questions, then go back to the parts of the booklet behind the ones you missed.
Studying for an exam outside New York
Use your own state's material, because the laws differ. California's exam questions must be based on the state's notary laws as printed in the handbook its Secretary of State publishes, and you also need an approved 6-hour course. Louisiana lets you bring its 2026 official study guide into the exam room, and nothing else.
