The ExCPT
NHA says you pay the exam fee when you choose your date, place and format in your NHA account. Its public pages don't list the amount, so check it there before you commit.
If you can't make your ExCPT date, reschedule in your account at least 24 hours ahead. Miss that and the fee is lost. You can move the exam to a new date within 6 months of the original one without paying again.
Retakes cost the full fee
Neither exam has a cheaper retake price. PTCB asks you to apply and pay for each attempt. NHA says you re-register and pay the full exam price each time.
That's the best reason to take a practice test or two before you book. If you're scoring well above 70% in practice, you're more likely to pass first time.
Training costs
If you qualify through a training program, its cost will be far bigger than the exam fee. Prices vary a lot between colleges, online programs and employer programs. Some pharmacy chains train their own staff. PTCB's program directory lists recognized programs you can compare.
Keeping your credential
Both credentials last 2 years, then you renew with continuing education and a fee. NHA asks for 20 hours of CE, including at least 1 hour of pharmacy law and 1 of patient safety. PTCB lists its rules on its renewal page.
