Can you take the pharmacy tech exam online?

It depends on the exam. NHA's ExCPT can be taken online at home with live remote proctoring. PTCB's PTCE can't: as of October 2026, PTCB says it's given in person at Pearson VUE test centers. You can still do most of the preparation online, including many training programs.

The ExCPT at home

NHA lets you take the ExCPT with live remote proctoring, at home or another suitable place. A proctor watches you over your webcam the whole time. NHA picks the remote provider for you when you register, and PSI is one of them.

Your internet must support voice calls (VoIP), and your computer must pass the provider's system check. Results post to your NHA account within 48 hours.

  • Test your computer, webcam and connection well before exam day.
  • Use a quiet, private room with a clear desk.
  • Have a current government photo ID ready for the proctor.
  • Don't use your own calculator. NHA provides one if needed.

The PTCE is in person

PTCB says the PTCE is given in person at more than 1,400 Pearson test centers across the US, including over 100 on military bases. A live proctor supervises you there. If you need the exam at home, the ExCPT is the option to look at, but check that your state and employer accept it.

Online training programs

Online programs are a common way to qualify. PTCB accepts PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Programs, and NHA accepts accredited or state-approved programs, among others. Use PTCB's directory to check a program before you pay for it.

Be careful with anything sold as "online certification". The CPhT only comes from passing the PTCE or ExCPT. A course certificate on its own isn't the same thing.

Continuing education after you pass

Both credentials need renewing every 2 years. NHA asks for 20 hours of continuing education, with at least 1 hour in pharmacy law and 1 in patient safety. Much CE is done online. Check that any course you take counts for your credential and your state.
