How to schedule the PTCB exam

You can't book the PTCE straight away. First you apply in your PTCB account. When PTCB approves you, it emails you to say you can schedule, and you then book a seat at a Pearson VUE test center. For the ExCPT, you apply and schedule in your NHA account.

Booking the PTCE, step by step

  1. Create a PTCB account at ptcb.org.
  2. Apply for the CPhT through your account and pay the $129 fee. Request any accommodations now.
  3. Wait for approval. PTCB emails you when you're authorized to schedule.
  4. Book your exam with Pearson VUE, online through your PTCB account or by phone at 866-902-0593. Your authorization lasts 90 days, so don't wait too long.
  5. On the day, arrive 30 minutes early with an approved ID that matches the name on your PTCB account.

Who can apply for the PTCE

You need to live in the US or a US territory and meet one of two pathways:

  • Pathway 1: complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program. You can also apply if you'll finish one within 60 days. A pharmacy degree can count instead.
  • Pathway 2: at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, all completed before you apply.

Booking the ExCPT

  1. Create a free NHA account and submit the ExCPT application.
  2. Choose a date and format: a PSI test center, or live remote proctoring at home. Pay the fee.
  3. Need to change it? Reschedule in your account at least 24 hours ahead, to a date within 6 months of the original.

Who can take the ExCPT

You need a high school diploma or equivalent, such as a GED, plus one of these:

  • A pharmacy technician training program completed within the last 5 years. That includes accredited or state-approved programs, registered apprenticeships, military training and qualifying employer programs.
  • At least 1,200 hours of supervised pharmacy work during a one-year period within the last 3 years.

Check your state first

Each state's board of pharmacy sets its own rules for technicians, including whether you need to be certified and which credentials it accepts. Check with your state board, or ask your employer, before you choose an exam.
