SC DMV permit test appointment: when you need one

You don't need one. SCDMV says an appointment isn't required for a knowledge test, so you can walk in to any branch, as long as you get there in time to start before 4 p.m. If you're looking for an SC DMV permit test appointment because you're ready for the road test, that works differently: road tests take walk-ins in the morning and booked appointments in the afternoon.

Do you need an SC DMV permit test appointment?

No. SCDMV's appointment page says it plainly: an appointment is not required for a knowledge test. It also says customers can't take knowledge tests after 4 p.m., so a late afternoon visit may mean coming back another day.

Bring your documents, and if you're under 18, the adult who will sign your consent form. You take the vision test at the same visit.

Booking a road test

Road test appointments for regular and motorcycle licenses run from 2 to 4 p.m., and you book them on SCDMV's online scheduler. If you're under 17, SCDMV asks you to check that you have everything on the teen list before you schedule, such as 180 days on your permit and your PDLA form.

Walk-in hours for road tests

All SCDMV branches take walk-ins for regular and motorcycle road tests from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On Wednesdays the walk-in window is 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

CDL skills tests always need an appointment

There are no walk-in CDL road tests. You book at one of the SCDMV branches that give them, Monday to Friday, arrive 30 minutes before your time, and if you're more than ten minutes late the appointment may be cancelled.
