Wisconsin · Permit test

Do you need a DMV appointment for the Wisconsin permit test?

Not for the permit tests. The knowledge and signs tests are walk-in only, and DMV doesn’t schedule them. Just go to a service center that offers testing, with time to finish before it closes. The road test is different: you book that online once you’re eligible.

Taking the permit tests

Teens 15 to 17 can skip the trip for the tests and take them online at home instead. You still visit a service center afterwards to get the permit.

  1. Use DMV’s service center finder to pick an office. Most give knowledge tests, but Milwaukee Downtown and Sauk City don’t.
  2. Bring your documents, the permit fee and, if you’re under 18, your signed MV3001.
  3. Allow about 45 minutes for the knowledge test, and arrive well before closing time.
  4. Pass your vision screening, the signs test and the knowledge test, then pay for your permit.

Scheduling the road test

You book the road test, also called the skills test, online at wisconsindmv.gov/roadtest. You’ll need your license or ID number (or Social Security number), date of birth, ZIP code and an email address or a cell phone that gets texts.

If you’re under 18, you must have held your permit for at least 6 months, logged 50 hours of practice (10 at night), and your driving school must have sent DMV proof that you finished driver education.

Cancelling and rescheduling

If you can’t make your road test, cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Otherwise you’ll be charged the $15 skills exam fee (as of October 2026). When you reschedule, your old appointment stays active until you confirm the new one.

If you fail, DMV sets a wait of 1 to 14 days, depending on how the test went, before you can book again.
