Wisconsin · Permit test

How many questions are on the Wisconsin permit test?

There are really two tests. The knowledge test has 50 questions, and you need 40 right. The highway signs test has 15 questions, and you need 12 right. That’s 80% on each, and you must pass both before DMV will issue your permit.

The score you need

The two are scored separately. A great knowledge score won’t make up for a weak signs score, so miss four sign questions and you’ll take the signs test again, even if you aced the rules.

What each test covers

The signs test checks that you can read and understand signs that regulate, warn and direct traffic. The knowledge test covers traffic laws and safe driving. Both come from the Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook.

  • Signs: warning, regulatory, construction, guide, service, route and railroad signs
  • Signals, lane lines and special lanes such as flex lanes
  • Right-of-way, intersections and roundabouts
  • Speed limits, following distance, passing and parking
  • Winter driving, emergencies, sharing the road and alcohol laws
  • Permit and probationary license rules

How long it takes

DMV says the Class D knowledge test takes about 45 minutes. It doesn’t publish a separate time for the signs test. Testing is walk-in, so arrive early enough to finish before the service center closes.

Most people test on a touchscreen computer, which tells you right away how you did. Paper tests are available, and you can ask for audio assist.

If you don’t pass

You can retry the next day. Each test can be taken five times in a 12-month period. After five fails, you need special permission from DMV staff to keep going.
