The NT MVR: what you do there on the way to your licence

The Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) is where you sit the theory test, take the eye test and pay for your learner and provisional licences. Before you can apply for a licence with the NT MVR, you have to become one of its customers, and that’s done in person.

Becoming an MVR customer

You must be an MVR customer to apply for a driver licence. To become one, go to an MVR office with evidence of your identity and your NT residency. If you aren’t a customer yet when you go for the theory test, you hand in that evidence with your L1 form.

Booking an MVR appointment

You can book an appointment at MVR Darwin or MVR Palmerston to apply for your learner licence. Bookings are made online through Territory Services.

After the practical driving test, you come back with your test sheet. The driving test page has the details.

How do you contact the NT MVR?

Call MVR on 1300 654 628, or go to an MVR office. The NT Government gives this number for checking whether a verbal theory test or an interpreter is offered in your area, and for booking that test.
