NT road rules: where to learn them for the theory test

The NT Government gives two ways to learn them before the theory test. You can study the NT Road Users’ Handbook and take a practice theory test, or enrol in DriveSafe NT. The NT road rules include the Australian Road Rules, which the handbook’s page says are used in each state and territory.

Where are the NT road rules written down?

The NT Road Users’ Handbook is the NT Government’s guide for all drivers. Its page lists eight sections:

  • How to use this handbook
  • Licences
  • Road safety
  • Safe driving
  • General road rules
  • Vehicle registration
  • Penalties
  • Glossary

In law, the rules sit in the Traffic Regulations 1999, made under the Traffic Act 1987. The Australian Road Rules are a separate entry, Schedule 3 of those regulations.

The official practice test

The NT Government’s licence page links a practice driver knowledge test for learner drivers. Next to it is a PDF of driver knowledge questions for learners. Both sit with the first step, passing the theory test.

DriveSafe NT

It’s the NT Government’s driver education, training and licensing program for Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Alice Springs. You get education and training from qualified driving instructors and assessors, and more than $600 in subsidies towards your licence.

Participants don’t pay several fees along the way, including the practical driving test and the provisional licence. DriveSafe NT has a remote program as well, for learners who live in remote communities.

A study plan for the theory test

You could work through it like this:

  1. Read the Road Users’ Handbook, starting with its licences and general road rules sections.
  2. Learn the give way rules until you can explain each case: intersections with no signs, T-intersections, turning right and roundabouts.
  3. Go over the learner licence conditions, because you drive under them from the day you get your licence receipt.
  4. Try the practice questions here and the official practice test, then book your Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) appointment.
