How does the Plates Plus course in Tasmania work?
The course has three sections, and you earn a key for each one by passing its challenge:
- Your driving attitude
- Signs and rules
- Sharing the road
You start with Your driving attitude. After that you can take the other two in any order. Once you hold all three keys, the driver knowledge test unlocks.
Plates Plus says the course should take around four to six hours, and you don’t have to do it in one go. Quizzes, activities and challenges run all the way through, you can’t skip content, and the challenge tutorials aren’t assessed.
Logging in to Plates Plus
You log in with your client ID and your date of birth. To get a client ID, you can:
- Apply online through Plates Plus, and it’s sent within one to two business days
- Go to a Service Tasmania shop with your evidence of identity
If you sat the standalone test in a shop, your client ID is on the same printout as your test ID.
Sitting the driver knowledge test online
You can sit it on your own device or a public one. Service Tasmania shops have public access computers.
You have one attempt every 12 hours for 365 days from your first enrolment. You can stop and come back to the course, but not partway through an assessment: leave the test and you lose that progress. If your device crashes, you can restart, and you’re locked out only if you’d submitted and a fail was recorded.
When you finish, you’re told whether you passed and get feedback on each question. After a pass, you have 12 months to go to a Service Tasmania shop, apply for your learner licence and pay the fee.

- About 1.5 GB of data to download the whole course
- Captions and a text alternative on every video, and text to speech
For questions about the road rules themselves, Plates Plus gives the phone number 1300 135 513.
