Road rules in Tasmania: where to learn them for the test

Plates Plus points to two ways to prepare: its free online course, or the Tasmanian Road Rules Handbook if you’re going straight to the standalone test. The road rules in Tasmania are set in law by the Road Rules 2019, which aim to be essentially uniform with road rules elsewhere in Australia.

Course or handbook?

Plates Plus says its data shows people who complete the course are more likely to pass than people who sit the standalone test, who it calls very unlikely to pass.

Where are the road rules in Tasmania written down?

Tasmania’s road rules are set out in the Road Rules 2019, made under the Traffic Act 1925. A note under rule 25 says Tasmania has changed it from the national model rules: with no sign, an unsealed road outside a built-up area has an 80 km/h limit, where a sealed one has 100 km/h.

A study plan for the standalone test

You could work through it like this:

  1. Read the Tasmanian Road Rules Handbook and watch learn to drive videos.
  2. Learn the giving way rules until you can explain each case: intersections, T-intersections, turning right and roundabouts.
  3. Go over the learner licence restrictions, because you drive under them once your licence is issued.
  4. Try the practice questions here, then go to a Service Tasmania shop with your evidence of identity.

Lessons and other help

Lessons with a certified driving instructor and Rotary Clubs of Tasmania’s RYDA road safety day both earn credit hours for your logbook. If you have no supervisory driver or car, the Learner Driver Mentor Program may be able to help.
