FP Canada exam guides, competency profiles and blueprints

FP Canada doesn’t publish a single textbook for the exams. What it does publish, free, are the documents that define them: the Guide to the CFP Examination and Guide to the QAFP Examination, a competency profile for each designation, and an exam blueprint with the weightings. Read the guide for your exam first, then study against the competency profile.

The official documents and what each is for

The syllabus in short

The competency profiles cover six financial planning areas: financial management, investment planning, insurance and risk management, tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning and law. Across each one, you’re tested on three functions: collecting information, analyzing it and recommending. Professional skills run through everything: conduct, critical thinking, interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.

Where the course material comes from

The course books themselves come with your education program, from the FP Canada Institute or a recognized college or university. FP Canada doesn’t offer them as free PDFs.

If you started with CSI, note that CSI’s courses stopped meeting FP Canada’s technical education requirements on June 30, 2026. FP Canada has a page on transferring your education.

Ethics and policies

You’ll also want FP Canada’s Standards of Professional Responsibility, which include the Code of Ethics, and the CFP or QAFP Certification Policies. The policies cover eligibility, attempts and timelines. As of June 1, 2026, you get up to four exam attempts within four years of finishing the Professional Education Program, and a maximum of eight if you requalify.
