Where does a learner’s practice test for NWT come from?

From apps, websites and driving schools, each written by whoever offers it. The questions on the real test are taken from the Driver’s Manual, so if a practice question and the manual disagree, go by the manual.

The Driver’s Manual, chapter by chapter

Each chapter, with its pages in the printed manual. The overview lists what each one covers:

  • Information about Driver’s Licences, pages 6 to 25
  • Traffic Controls, pages 26 to 51
  • Starting Your Vehicle, pages 52 to 69
  • Intersections and Turns, pages 70 to 83
  • Lane Driving, pages 84 to 93
  • Handling Emergency Situations, pages 94 to 109
  • The Responsible Driver, pages 110 to 121
  • Sharing the Road, pages 122 to 137
  • Driving Within the Law, pages 138 to 153
  • Towing a Trailer, pages 154 to 158

Driver and Vehicle Services also calls it the Basic Handbook and the NWT Basic Driver’s Manual. It was developed from Alberta’s Basic Licence Driver’s Handbook, with Alberta’s permission. The manual says test questions may also come from the other manuals if they apply to you.

A study plan for the two tests

Work through the manual in this order:

  1. Start with chapter 1. It sets out the learner rules you’ll drive under once you pass.
  2. One of the two tests is on road signs, so give chapter 2, Traffic Controls, plenty of time. Learn the sign shapes and colours first, then the signs one by one.
  3. Read chapters 3 to 10, and write down the numbers as you go, such as parking distances, following distance and demerit points.
  4. Test yourself with the flash cards, a friend quizzing you from the manual or a practice app, and reread what you get wrong.

Do you need a driving school?

No. The steps to a Class 7 and a Class 5 licence don’t include a course. The manual recommends professional driver training on top of your own study, and it says approved defensive driving courses run through licensed driver training schools.
