SGI practice test: SGI’s quiz and where to study

Start with the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook from Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), then check yourself on the practice quiz on SGI’s website. The handbook sends you to that quiz, so it’s the one practice test that comes from SGI. Every other SGI practice test, in an app or on a website, is made by another company. For lessons, there’s high school driver education or an SGI-certified instructor.

A study plan for the Basic and Sign tests

  1. Get the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook. It’s a PDF, and the online version adds animations.
  2. Learn the six basic sign shapes and the sign colours at the start of chapter 4, then the rest of the signs. Signs have a test of their own.
  3. Read the rest of the handbook for the Basic test, which covers driving situations and the rules of the road. Chapter 3 has the rules of the road.
  4. Write down the numbers as you go, like speed limits, following distances and when to dim your headlights.
  5. Try SGI’s practice quiz, and go back to the handbook for anything you get wrong.

Is there an official SGI learner’s practice test?

Yes, a practice quiz on SGI’s own website. The Driver’s Handbook tells you that you can find practice test questions at sgi.sk.ca/quiz.

Use it to check what you’ve learned from the handbook.

High school driver education

A certified High School Driver Education Program is 30 hours in class and six hours in the car. It counts as the mandatory driver education you need before your road test, and it’s the route that lets you take the learner’s test at 15.

SGI-certified driver instructors

Not in high school? The other route is at least six hours in class and six hours in the car with an SGI-certified driver instructor, from age 16. You need it before you can move past a Class 7 licence, not before the learner’s test.

How to choose

Studying on your own? The handbook and SGI’s practice quiz are the two things SGI itself points you to. An app adds more questions to practise on, but it doesn’t come from SGI, so the handbook has the final word.

In high school? Ask your school about its driver education program. It also covers the training you need for the road test.
