What’s in the Yukon driver’s handbook?

Ten chapters, each with its pages in the printed handbook:

  • You in the driver’s seat, pages 3 to 10
  • You and your vehicle, pages 11 to 26
  • Signs, signals and road markings, pages 27 to 38
  • Rules of the road, pages 39 to 56
  • See-think-do, pages 57 to 76
  • Sharing the road, pages 77 to 94
  • Impairment and high risk behaviour, pages 95 to 109
  • Preventing and handling emergencies, pages 110 to 128
  • Graduated Driver Licensing program, pages 129 to 139
  • Licensing requirements, pages 140 to 149

The 2023 handbook is built from British Columbia’s Learn to Drive Smart book, with that province’s permission. It says that where it differs from Yukon’s acts and regulations, the law applies.

A study plan for the knowledge test

Work through the handbook in this order:

  1. Read the first two chapters, on the choices you make as a driver and how your vehicle works.
  2. Spend extra time on the signs chapter, because the test asks about road signs as well as rules.
  3. Read the chapters on rules, see-think-do, sharing the road, impairment and emergencies, and write down the numbers as you go: parking distances, following distance and when to dim your headlights.
  4. Try the 20 practice questions on the overview, and reread the section behind anything you get wrong.

Do you need a driving school?

Not to get your licence. The Government of Yukon’s licence steps list tests, logged hours and time in each stage, and no course.

The handbook says you can prepare for the Class 5 road test with lessons from a professional driving instructor, and that driver education courses are available for beginners and experienced drivers alike.
