New Zealand · Theory test

Can you sit the NZ driving theory test online?

No. You sit the learner licence theory test on a computer at a driver licensing agent, and the AA (the New Zealand Automobile Association), one of the two kinds of agent, says the theory test can’t be done online. What you can do online is learn and practise: the road code course on Drive is free, and before 25 January 2027 you book the restricted and full driving tests on the site of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). So any online driving test you find in NZ is a practice test, not the real one.

Why isn’t there an online driving test in NZ?

The test is part of your licence application, and the agent has to see you. The AA says it needs to check your identity, take your photo and signature and take your payment, and that this can’t be done online. You then sit the test on-site, on the agent’s computer.

What you can do online

  • Learn the road code in the Drive Road Code, on a computer, tablet or phone
  • Take Drive’s official practice tests once you’ve unlocked them
  • Download the DL1 application form and fill it in before you go
  • Book and pay for a restricted or full licence test with NZTA, under the system before 25 January 2027

Watch out for online licence scams

The AA warns about scammers who use AA, VTNZ (Vehicle Testing New Zealand) and NZTA branding to offer licences or licence conversions online or on social media. It says licence applications aren’t done online and no part of the process happens on social media.
