Where to find a learner licence practice test in NZ

For a learner licence practice test in NZ, start with Drive, the free learning site from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and ACC (the Accident Compensation Corporation). Its official practice tests unlock as you work through the Drive Road Code: pass 3 chapter tests and you get one, pass all 12 and you can take as many as you like. The AA (New Zealand Automobile Association) sells its own practice tests, each with 35 questions in the style of the real one, and a few apps add road code questions too. They’re all practice, so check anything that looks odd against the road code itself.

  • 3Chapter tests per Drive practice test
  • 12Chapter tests for unlimited practice
  • $12.50For 5 AA practice tests, after a free trial

Is there an official learner licence practice test in NZ?

Yes, on Drive. Drive calls its practice tests official, and you unlock them by passing the chapter tests in the Drive Road Code. You can read the chapters without an account, but you need to sign up to save your progress and unlock the practice tests.

Drive has two more free tools for the theory test. The tough word tester teaches the tricky words and terms that can come up in the test, and the tricky questions test lets you sign up and see some of the hardest questions in it.

The AA’s own tests are a different thing. The AA says its Road Code Practice Test isn’t an official practice test, and that NZTA doesn’t endorse it or vouch for its questions.

A study plan for the theory test

  1. Work through the Drive Road Code one chapter at a time, and take each chapter test as you finish it.
  2. Look up any word you don’t know. Drive underlines the tricky ones, and you can tap a word to see what it means.
  3. Use the practice tests you unlock, and read the road code again on every topic you get wrong.
  4. Try the tricky questions test once your scores are steady.
  5. Book the real test when you’re passing practice tests with 32 or more right out of 35.

Choosing a paid practice test or app

Check three things before you pay. Does it cover the car (class 1) test, not only motorbikes or trucks? Does it say its questions come from the New Zealand road code? And does it let you sit a full 35-question test, so you get used to the real length?

The AA’s practice tests are sold in packs after a free trial, and they’re in English only. The apps compared on this page range from free with paid extras to a one-off price.

Practice after you pass

Once you have your learner licence, the practice moves into the car. Drive’s free Drive Go app has 44 driving skills to work through with your supervisor, ready for the restricted licence test.
